One of the things I love about the evolution of technology from a marketing point of view is that for the first time in many years, the smallest of businesses on the tightest of budgets can play side-by-side the big boys and be just as competitive. Think about it, social networking sites allow the little guy to compete against multi-million dollar companies on a level playing field like no other form of marketing can.

Let’s consider Twitter, the darling of social sites that is getting all the attention these days. At no cost to a business, a Twitter account can be set up and for less than $50 a custom designed background can be created putting your Twitter page on pair with Zappos, a multi-million dollar company that sells shoes online. What I love most about Twitter is that content in king, not flashy graphics, funny videos or expert blogs. It is simply 140 character of text that yes, can be linked to flashy graphics or funny videos, but to be successful on Twitter, only time and quality content is required.

Along with Twitter, there are a number of other social media sites where content is king and it won’t cost a dime to sign up or maintain the accounts. Sites like, Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace can all be used to spread the word of your business to a targeted market. Before signing up to a number of social media sites, it is important to understand your target market and which social sites they will be using. As an example Facebook, originally called thefacebook, was founded by Mark Zuckerberg while attending Harvard and initially meant only to be used by Harvard students. As the concept grew in popularity, it became available to other schools and eventually made public to everyone. Since Facebook started out among college students, they represent the key demographics although the 35-54 age group is growing quickly.

Technology has given you, the business owner, a great opportunity to market to your specific demographics without having to print fliers or pay for postage. It is up to you to take complete and total control of this not established market tool to dominate your market place.
